We had been working closely with Proctor & Gamble for some years and were in a unique position to pitch a new display for Braun. At the time of presenting concepts to the client it had not been allocated or sold into retailers. How do you reduce risk of theft and still let consumers touch and feel the product. Braun product are beautifully modern designed with the intention of being held. We wanted to move away from zip ties and clamps which obscure the product and don’t provide the customer with the right feel/aesthetic the brand deserves. We moved to a fully custom, hidden security jacket that would make the product look like it was floating. Knowing that around 50% of the Braun handles have a TPU or TPE handle posed a great challenge of adhering any security tether. We tooled the jacket from the same TPU because of its shoreness and conformability without making it weak. It is rare a company has to many brands under its umbrella to warrant one all year round. Proctor & Gamble however do, and engaged with us to run a semi permanent off-location floor stand that enabled cross promotion, month to month. Reducing preproduction costs and increasing sales across aisles. The unit is designed to be assembled by 1 Brand Rep and fit easily in a hatch-back or wagon for transport. The base is also dipped in wax to make it waterproof. Many displays get damaged when stores mop, clean restock at night. Water damaged and being run into by trollies and pallets. Every single panel on the floorstand is updatable, simple offset printed, laminated card (cheap to produce). Every month the tower can be redressed for a new promotion and stocked with different P&G products. The old units were made from layers of thick acrylic, weighing too much and constantly broke when moved or in transit. With a background in Sculpture, he designs Furniture, Interiors with a primary focus on Fine Jewelry. I have known Hamish for many years. Whilst I was in my third year at RMIT University he had won a grant to create a sculpture for Melbourne Central. Piece was a cloud that grew and shrunk with the population of the Centre. The rig was enormous and had complex pully systems to allow it to grow and shrink as data was read through a small onboard computer. Fans and light filled the hollow space, giving it form and texture. I worked as an assistant for Hamish as I learnt valuable skills in bespoke creation as well as working with other parties as an Independent Designer. I had the pleasure of developing the Swisse display - a sleek black unit to house their multivitamins and suppliments. Some of the design challenges includes: Scope of stores they wanted to hit, The budget Different stock the unit had to carry (weight and size). I added pins and clips to attach metal feet to each shelf, allowing it to securely attach to any position on the display, without breaking the abs shelf. The tooling has a textured finish to the top to stop the product sliding around, whilst being glossy on the outer surface. Finished off with a pad stamped Swisse logo on all sides. The shelf also has two relief slots to allow a divider and artwork to be run down the right side - turning it into a 2 sided display. The Mesh End display has fully updatable side and shelf fronts. There are retainers molded and folded into the body to allow paper/card prints to be held. Custom brackets with adjustability for any unique or un-uniform store. All fastening used a single M4 Allen key (included with every unit). I was able to start a new project with them which is continuing still today. Swisse approached us wanting to do promotional/seasonal released of off-location temporary displays. The challenges lay in quality control and packing of the displays, ensuring no damages or losses from our facility to the shop floor. Strict records are kept of stock coming in and going out - damages and miscounts. For the first few runs I was on the floor at all times keeping track of progress, being sure we hit all State rollouts on schedule. The hardest portion of the project was keeping open communication with Supermarket Giants and ensuring all product codes, deliveries and compliance were up to scratch. Due to the sheer size of their operation we had to be on our toes. I ran 4 runs of promotional pre-packs at 900 units per run, before transitioning onto larger clients and bringing in a new Account Manager for Swisse. The project had been approved and was in production when I arrived. I flew to China to meet with our General Manager to Quality Control the assembly and packing of the complex units. The original run had a dozen different retailers and planograms requiring batch production offshore to ensure no components were mixed. Due to Customs and regulations on shipping batteries and electronics, the product had to be repacked and fitted at our Melbourne, Australia facility. Oral B were sold on the idea and moved to develop it and implement directly into Dentist’s waiting rooms. The display enable patients to work through oral issues such as gingivitis and find the appropriate Oral B product for them. The application has an inbuilt shopping cart that allows patients to buy Oral B product, delivered to their door. I worked closely with our Graphic and UX design team and App Developer to ensure the relationship between the software and hardware were symbiotic. Having input on the user journey as well as ease of use. Reducing visible edges, parts requiring assembly onsite and adjustability all reduced costs. The display came in 3 main pre assembled components that fit together, reducing the engagement time instore. A further 10 pre-production units were produced and installed in Metro-Melbourne stores as an initial launch and approval for the 200+ balance made. Sourcing and creative problem solving were a key ingredient to the success of the project. Some of the complexities included: Custom timber laminate with a wood-like texture was custom made to suit the brands existing flooring product. Metal fabrication done requiring custom tools to hold painted samples in a custom matte black powder coating for durability. Integrated LED lighting for shelving and LED downlights for that “living-room” feel. Production from 4 suppliers - sent to one Quality Control Facility for packing in China. Die-cut magnetic panels - primed, sealed and shipped to Melbourne ahead for painting. We had a packing and roll-out schedule that carried on for 3 months with a 95% success rate. Popcorn handled the entire distribution and installation of the units across Australia & New Zealand. The Re-launch of an acquired artisan paints brand: Porter’s Paints. The brand was being launched into Bunnings Warehouse and the Dulux Group had received approval for an entire bay display. Knowing the client and their expectations on quality and compliance we won the tender. As the Account Manager for Dulux it was my job to re-design, improve and engineer the display before moving onto prototype and production. The overall design/layout of the bay was preconceived by the Porter’s team at Dulux, but was missing some important communication. What sets Porter’s aside from other brands is their signature textured finish and artisan hand crafted, pre-mixed colours. Meaning you can take the can directly off the shelf to check-out without needing to visit the paint counter. Much more self service! Their Lip & Creme’s on shelf in CVS was a mess and would fall off shelf constantly. We worked through multiple designs and chose injection moulding/vacuum forming production methods knowing the amount of stores this would rollout to. Initially the project was for multi-tiered display that could go on-shelf in aisle or on counter. However the brief slowly evolved as Nivea became more invested in our problem solving. Due to the strict guidelines CVS gave Nivea we weren’t allowed to take up any additional space than the product already held and had to display a large price sticker per product. We came to an elegant solution of an injection moulded gravity tray that feed lip sticks down, with the finger tab revealing the brand and flavour. Each tray has a large section for price ticketing. The sides (left and right) are the same part, with magnets inset. The trays keyhole into the side panels and then magentise together for a sleek, tight solution. We took advantage of a Nivea logo we had produced in a project prior and added to the bottom tray - as we could put the price ticket in the shelf front below. The Facility was setup as a customer/stock storage, prototyping and assembly space. Most of the machines were used for prototyping or small production runs, with myself as the technician for programming, upkeep and routine safety. I quickly took the space as my responsibility as 90% of the work undertaken was for the client I managed. I took charge of hiring/rostering as well as production scheduling on top of my growing list of clients. Before departing I had increased efficiency in the space and a solid body of reliable, detail oriented casual staff. Over the last 24 months (during Covid) we have 3-5 staff on with social distancing and covid safe practices in place working on up to 3 projects at a time. Gillette has over 9 styles of shavers available at most retailers and many customers don’t know the differences. The Bay draws customers in with colour blocking and then displays the various Gillette product, benefits and features. This prototype was installed inShaverShop Chadstone Shopping Centre, Melbourne. Simple request but with an incredibly tight budget and small batch run of only 10-15 units a year. The unit has to sit 30mm of the ground, support some heavy machines. Enable the units to be discreetly plugged into power with a branded lip and header, and updatable sleeved for product info. I engineered the unit to be extremely lightweight and durable - low cost and fast to manufacture. The base is made from gloss white folded Aluminum Composite Panel, bolted to an MDF skeleton with furniture fittings and slotting cross members to support the product weight. The front lip, header and logo are all reverse UV printed clear Acrylic to match Lavazza’s signature blue. The header has relief holes for power cables, then finger screws into the Aluminum Panel with the help of sheet nutserts (inset nuts). An example of what looks simple and cost effective but took up to 5 different machine processes and light engineering to accomplish. A lot of students used it to hone past projects or learn new skills. I focused on combining my love for machining metal and archery. Using a 4-axis CNC machine, digital lathe, hand mill and various tools created this bow. It is a modified recreation of a Oneida Recurve Compound Bow. The bow uses a complex series of pullies and cams to take the poundage of the arrow off the user until released.
